The Everyday Life Reader
'The Everyday Life Reader' is a film that juxtaposes everyday routines from different eras to reveal how leisure time, lifestyle cultures and technology impact upon modern everyday life. 'The Everyday Life Reader' involves me carrying out an everyday routine of reading a newspaper, drinking a cup of tea in a living room, whilst simultaneously listening to music on a gramophone in the background. It shows the changes in social uses of musical technologies that have been influenced by cultural customs and changes in lifestyle and leisure time. Society is full of vast quantities of objects that have become auratically empty, lack quality and are consumed because of what they signify. The discrete changes in design and the built-in obsolescence of objects have catalysed an obsession with lifestyle ideologies that consumption offers. 'The Everyday Life Reader' reveals that the process of listening to music has radically changed and this stems from lifestyle changes in response to technological innovations.
