Gramophonica involves live gramophone glitching, manually maintained looping and mechanical beat making and matching by playing re-appropriated 78rpm records on a wind-up gramophone. This form of gramophone turntablism reinvents the uses of obsolete mechanical musical hardware. Kashiwagi extracts unexpected sounds and musical fragments from existing music from 78rpm records using tactile techniques. This includes cutting electrical tape and applying it in radiating strips to records to create additional tactile layers that create percussive discordances and unexpected harmonies as the steel needle staggers or glides across the discreetly undulating strips of electrical tape. Kashiwagi is also making her own DIY self-amplifying styluses to capture otherworldly inherent sounds. She is currently researching into material resonance frequencies and mechanical oscillations. Gramophonica shows the potential to transform sounds from a specific era (1920s-1950s) to sounds that sound post contemporaneous, like Detroit House Music and Ambient Techno.
Bunford & Kashiwagi In The Mix (Performances)
Naomi Kashiwagi produced ‘Bunford & Kashiwagi…In The Mix’- site-specific performances at Manchester Museum, Whitworth Art Gallery and John Rylands Library as part of ‘Manchester Weekender 2012’. Huw Bunford performed his soundscapes made from found sounds from each of the cultural attractions. Naomi Kashiwagi re-appropriated 78rpm shellac records with materials from each venue’s conservation departments, including algae, leather shavings, gold leaf, net, rubber shavings, Japanese tissue papers and non-slip rubber. Site-specific materials were used to either re-appropriate the records or act as alternative styluses. Together, they performed site-specific performances at each of the venues that echoed and animated the cultural spaces where the sounds and materials came from.
